about

At a show in Red Deer, a member of another band made a joke about raping his bandmate. After the set, Megan told this person that making such a joke wasn't cool. He responded in a very dismissive way, acting cool in front of the youngsters who came to see his band. His response led one of the kids – who was also in a band – to say that rape "happens," that there is nothing that can be done about it so whatever. I felt like I had come face to face with rape culture, its dissemination and recreation, and it blew my mind. A chelsea grin, or a glasgow smile, refers to having a smile cut into your face: rape culture, the dismissal and blaming of survivors of sexual assault, cuts a smile into our face and we just act like everything is ok. And if you say something about it, somehow you're overreacting or being too politically correct. The last statistic I saw for sexual assault statistics for women was 1-in-4. For men, it's somewhere near 1-in-5. And things only get worse for people of colour, people who are transgender, people who have disabilities, and people who are homeless. (Kyle)

lyrics

I feel a twisting in my guts / It seems like no one cares too much / About the things we scream and shout / Like, "Oh those things, well, they just happen. / There's no need to talk about them." / Small signs of hope quickly replaced with doubt / Rape joke! / Don't you think I'm funny? / No? Well, that's too bad / Already got your money! / Rape Joke! / I'm not being serious / My falsest apologies / But your pain is hilarious / 1 in 4 women, not sure if you're aware / How dare we try to question their artistic flair? / They were only joking / Words don't mean a thing / Everyone else was fine / No complaints through chelsea grins / You might not want to admit that you have any authority / But when you take the microphone, your voice is top priority / And we can't challenge much when the systems we oppose use this same language as its crutch / I feel a twisting in my guts / It seems like no one gives a fuck / About the things we scream and shout / We just think that you're all worth it / But by no means are we perfect/ So let's do what we can to help each other out.
